At the August 13 Board of Trustees meeting, the Dolphin Committee of the Manhattan Beach Roundhouse Aquarium presented MBUSD with a special photo of bottlenose dolphins near the Manhattan Beach Pier. This gift honors the district’s long-standing support of the aquarium and pays tribute to the late Evelyn “Evie” Hannah Rowland, a beloved Grand View teacher and one of the Aquarium’s founders.
Judge Richard Fruin, OTS Board member and aquarium co-founder, presented the gift, noting that there has been a long history of collaboration between the Roundhouse and Manhattan Beach schools, from offering marine science experiences to serving as an opportunity for Mira Costa students to volunteer.
The photo is part of a research effort at the aquarium known as the OTS Coastal Bottlenose Dolphin Project. Since 2018, Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc. (OTS) aquarist Eric Martin has been observing, photographing and video recording the behavior of three pods of coastal bottlenose dolphins that are frequent visitors to the Manhattan Beach Pier/Roundhouse Aquarium. These observations are being used to prepare educational material and to share with the public to promote dolphin awareness and conservation.
Captive bottlenose dolphins have contributed significantly to research in echolocation, thermoregulation, diving physiology, communication and behavior. Despite the wealth of information from captive dolphins, less is known about dolphin behavior in the wild, even though knowledge of this behavior can contribute to dolphin conservation programs.
In a book on the history of the Roundhouse Aquarium, Rowland is quoted as saying, “”One day I had a class to teach at the Roundhouse so I went down early to prepare. I was standing at the end of the pier when a pod of dolphins came by. As I watched them play, I thought to myself, “This is the best place in the whole world.'”
As part of his presentation, Fruin shared a dolphin surfing video featuring local dolphins interacting with surfers off the coast of Manhattan Beach.
The Dolphin Committee’s next public event, “Why Do Dolphins Surf?”, will take place on September 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Library.
